Bob was born to Kent Roland and Anna Louise (Miller) Slaughter at home in Montrose, Jewell Co, KS on Friday, December 13, 1940. He passed July 10, 2023 at his home in Laramie, Albany Co, WY.
Bob grew up on his parents’ farm south of Montrose, playing as an only child since his sister was 15 years older. He had a great time playing out the characters that he saw in movies and comic books, each one was a very vivid part of his imagination.
As a young man he worked with his father, Kent Slaughter and brother-in-law, Jesse B. Crum in construction and carpentry which he strived to be a perfectionist. He always considered Jesse as his mentor as they were very close throughout life.
After graduating Montrose High School in 1958, he attended college at Kansas State in Manhattan, KS and then transferred to Fort Hays State in Hays, KS. In Sept 1960 he joined the U.S. Navy with two friends. He went to Boot camp in Monterrey, CA; Schooling in Baltimore, MD; back to Monterrey, CA, to study the Bulgarian language. He was assigned to a base in Turkey and served there until December 1963. After returning to the US, he attended Spanish Language School in Anacostia, Washington D.C., and was assigned to NSA in Ft. George G. Meade, MD for a time. While there he did tours of duty aboard several ships. Then another school in Ft. Devens, MA. He also was stationed in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Rota Spain for a short while and then, Sabana Seca Puerto Rico and Key West, FL where he retired after serving 20 years.
On July 4, 1962 he married Marjorie Louise Kincheloe after meeting her on a blind date before entering the US Navy. To this union were born 5 children: Vashti Kathryn, Anita Louise (deceased), Brian Scott, Robynne Lynne and Crystal Elaine. On July 4, 2022, they celebrated 60 years of marriage and recently their 61st anniversary.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he returned to school at the University of Wyoming where he received his BA in Theatre and Dance. He was cast in several plays at the University of Wyoming and had the privilege of going to New York City where he was in an off-off-off Broadway play which was also produced at King’s College in the U.K. in an exchange program. His acting continued including a role on “Unsolved Mysteries” that still shows on cable TV.
Bob loved living near the mountains in Laramie, WY! Hunting, fishing and just enjoying the outdoors was relaxing for him. The family gathered firewood to keep the woodstove humming and many days were enjoyed with wood heat from our labor. He enjoyed watching his children finish their High School years in Laramie and then to watch them go off on their own course of living life.
After graduation from UW, Bob worked in the Office of Academic Advising before he officially retired. He also yearned to see what was on the other side of the hill and to do that, he purchased campers, motorhomes and ended up with a Cottage in Apache Junction, AZ, locally known as The Valley of the Sun near the Superstition Mountains. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends while there during the winter months of October through April.
Passing on before him are his parents – Kent & Anna Slaughter, daughter – Anita Louise, sister and brother-in-law – June and Jesse Crum, nephews – Craig Brian Crum and Terry Lynn Crum.
Surviving are: wife, Marj, children: Vashti (Clay) Eppler; Brian (Becky) Slaughter; Robynne (Reo) Buckingham; and Crystal De Raffele; grandchildren: Joshua & Zachary Eppler, Rex (Heidi) Slaughter, Stacey (Tod) Stevens, Seth & Lydia Buckingham, Jacqueline (Vito) Martino, Candace De Raffele and Felicia Willett; great-grandchildren: Haley, Natalie, Mckinsey, Lane, Parker and Forestt.
