Kenneth Michael Sexton, 61, of Laramie died on May 2, 2016 in his home with his loving wife and caregiver, sitting by his side, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Mike was born in Laramie to Robert (Bob) Sexton and Louise (Johnson) Sexton on February 17, 1956. Being the son of a game warden his childhood found him living in several small towns throughout Wyoming. Returning to Laramie in 1963, he graduated from Laramie High School in 1974.
Mike began his law enforcement career in 1978 with the Laramie Police Department, moving through the ranks of Officer, Sargent, Lieutenant and Commander. He was also a member of the SWAT team and a motorcycle officer. He attended the 164th session at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VI in 1991. He always enjoyed his service with his brothers in blue and always took every one of his duties & positions seriously and carried them out to the best of his ability. After 23 years of service Mike retired from the Laramie Police Department and began his second career with the Wyoming State Fire Marshall’s Office as a Fire Investigator. He regretfully retired in the final two weeks of his life.
He loved all the great outdoors had to offer, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, snowmobiling, kayaking & riding his motorcycle. There wasn’t a Wyoming back road or “hidden” fishing hole that he didn’t know about.
Mike was an excellent marksman and shot competitively throughout his law enforcement career, more times than not taking home the grand prize. To look at him and know him you would never guess that he had a love and an amazing talent for counted cross stitch. He used this hobby to “relax”. His creations share space on the walls of his home and his children’s homes. He also had a love for Blue Grass music and attended festivals when he could.
Mike is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sue, his three children Megan Sexton (Scott), Ashley Sexton Allen (Jeff), and Mitchell Sexton (Chelsea & Gideon), his two grandchildren Zander and Peyton Allen, his father and mother Bob and Louise Sexton, his three sisters, Debbie Wempen (Bill), Janice Sexton, & Sandra Goza (Larry) and his nieces and nephews Diana, Lisa, John, Judy-Ann and Robert.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meredith and Jeannie Ray Cancer Center located at 255 N 30th St in Laramie, WY.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Monday, May 8th at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday May 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Albany County Fairgrounds.
To the Sexton family. I am very saddened about the loss of Mike. I always enjoyed being around him and loved his smile and laugh that was always a part of who he was. I was honored to be one of his classmates and looked forward to seeing him at the class reunions. He will be missed.
I only saw Mike at the reunions for class of 1974. He was always a friendly face and someone I usually gravitated to after many years of not seeing him. He had great stories about my father. When I heard that he died, it felt like I got stabbed in the heart. I wish, now, that I had done more with him than merely chat at reunions. He was a great guy. I hope that he went into the night with that knowledge.
Sue and family. Lois and I want you to know how very sorry we are to hear of your loss. Mike was a great friend. Never forget the happy hours we spent at bluegrass festivals. May God grant you peace.
Thank you so much Don and Lois!!
Dear Sexton Family, I am saddened reading about your loved one, Mike. He was always professional and caring while performing his job. May the memories of beautiful times together give you peace in the days ahead and may God give you strength.
I remember spending time with Mike in Hawk Springs when we were just kids. We had a lot of fun. I also remember Mike as a very dedicated law enforcement officer. He was always happy and had a positive attitude. He would always take time to visit when he brought his police car in for repairs. Mike was a good man and will be missed by many. Our condolences to the Sexton family. Peace be with you my friend.
