Jeffrey Todd Bury, 57, of Laramie died on July 24, 2016 due to colon cancer.
Jeff was born in Laramie to Joseph C. Bury and Shirley M. Kellogg on March 17, 1959. He graduated from Laramie High School in 1977, and then worked odd jobs while keeping his eye on the prize at the Laramie Police Department; the only job he ever wanted. He was sworn in as a police officer in 1981 where he first served as a patrol officer for 15 years. He was later selected for promotion to Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Acting Commander, Operations Commander, and his most recent position as Assistant Chief of Police. Jeff graduated from the elite FBI National Academy in 2003, Session 212, and was also a member and Commander of the Special Response Team for 30 years. At just one month shy of 35 years as a respected lawman, Jeff regretfully retired in the final two weeks of his life.
Jeff loved working with his hands, and thoroughly enjoyed building his cabin. Despite his early ending, Jeff obtained the things that he always wanted in life: the job he loved, and a loving wife and beautiful children who made his happy home complete.
He is survived by his wife Susan, and his children Jacob Bury, Delta Burchi, Morgan Bury, Carter Burchi, and Christopher Bury. He is also survived by his sister Janine Rauch of Casper and her children Seth, Adam, Rachael, and Emma. He loved them all, and is dearly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an organization that was dear to his heart, the Laramie Police Department Foundation at www.lpdfoundation.org.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday July 29, at 2 pm at the Marion H. Rochelle Gateway Center at 222 South 22nd Street in Laramie, followed by a reception at 4 pm at the University of Wyoming Fieldhouse.

I had the opportunity to work with Jeff since early in his career. Jeff led an honorable life and devoted his career to service. The family has lost a loved member, the community has lost a valuable servant. God Bless!
And as this loyal officer is laid to rest, we are reminded that the Lord only takes the best. He will continue to watch over you and your family, the same way he watched over others in his duties as an officer. We didn't know him, but are very grateful and thankful for his services.
To the family and the many loved ones; I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I realize you may not know me but I used to be married to one of Jeff's best friends since childhood, John Gilbert. Way back in 81 I had the pleasure of helping tutor several of the new LPD officers. JEff was one that always stood out. His humor, honesty and professionalism were always at the front I last received his bear hug a few years ago when I dropped by for lunch with Jeff , Don, Dale and Mitch. Seemed like it had only been days and the memories flew My deepest condolences to his family and MANY friends Kyle Heyen

Susan and Family, we grieve with you for your loss. However, we are happy to have known Jeff for these past years. We enjoyed celebrating holidays together and will remember his friendly sense of humor. He leaves a legacy of a loving family and loyal friends. We wish you and the family all the best as you cope with your grief during this time of sorrow. Gary and Norma Wilkerson
The best way I can put it is Jeff was a good cop, and a great person. Sharp wit, genuine concern and caring for others, and a positive outlook on life. I had the privilege of working with Jeff during the first part of his career, and was very pleased to see that he went on to serve as a senior commander. I know that everyone has great memories of Jeff, and that those are his gifts to us all. Rest easy, Jeff. You've earned it. Cliff Aims
Officer Bury,... I may have never met you, but I sure do appreciate you. I hope you can hear me in heaven, thank you sir for putting your badge on everyday, even when you were tired and not in the mood to put up with the issues of the day, but you did it anyway and selflessly protected people like me and my family. In the pictures I've seen it's obvious that you love your country and family, and your country loves you. And now Sir, your job here is done, thank you for a job well done.......... via con Dios
Officer Bury,.... I may never have met you, but I just wanted to thank you for putting on your badge everyday and protecting people like me, and far too many times with no gratitude from the public. Trust me, your selfless acts do not go un-noticed. The love for your country and your family is obvious. Thank you sir once again for your service, and now,.....your job is done via con Dios
Let me start first by saying This man is going to be missed by all that knew him. Of the 7 that were hired at least three became Chiefs or Assistant Chiefs. I worked with Jeff in many positions within the LPD. I really got to know Jeff when we went to a 3 week school in Huntington Beach, CA. We did have fun. I going to miss him. I remember I stopped by the PD some 15 years after retiring I asked to talk to the Chief. They put me throu a process. I had to show a Retirement Badge. All of a sudden Jeff came Bustting into the Lobby and gave me a Bear Hug almost knocking me down and lifting me off my feet. We talked for a few and the he went back to work Traing his SRT Team. That the way Jeff was. He really was one of the good ones No make that one of the great ones! Bob Miller
Rest in peace Jeff, it was an honor to work in the same profession, God bless.
Jeff was a very goodhearted man who loved his life. He was a very easy going and kind person. This is very sad for his family but please know that he loved you and he is watching over you.
Sorry for your loss I met Jeff while his sister Janine and I ran around together. You all are in my Prayers.
I was one of 7 who started with Jeff on the PD in 1981, and he has remained a dear friend since then. I miss Jeff terribly. Jeff was a great friend, a person who you could learn a lot from, and of course, who could ever forget Jeff's great sense of humor. The world lost one of the good ones Sunday night, and he will forever be in our hearts and on our minds. Chery and I miss you, Jeff. We send our love to you and your family. Don Wick
Hey Don, thanks for your comments. I look forward to meeting you someday soon. Susan
I will truly miss Jeff not only as a brother in law enforcement, but he was a true and caring person. May God hold you close. Don Farmer.
We are so sorry for your loss. Jeffery sounded like a great man.
Thoughts and prayers with you
I am very sorry for your loss. Jeff was a great person who opened his home to me when I first moved to Laramie and gave me a place to stay, to being in my wedding as a groomsman, and who I called a friend. Though we had not kept in touch, I am glad to hear that he was surrounded by family and friends until his untimely passing. Dan Pillard
God Bless Jeff's family with Strength and Peace.
He loved you. You loved him. I'm so glad God blessed you with the true love we all hope for.
God bless my friend. Your courage and strength will never be forgotten.
Susan and all of Jeff's family, I am so sorry to hear about Jeff's passing. I have such fond memories of both of you from our Leadership Laramie class. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I hope you can find comforting memories and moments of peace during these difficult days.
Susan, Jacob, Delta, Morgan, Carter, and Christpher, I had the pleasure of knowing and working with your husband and father for all of his career at the LPD. He was respected in the law enforcement community and within the other city departments. I will always remember his ability to share a laugh at other's expense, but never with malice. He could be the consummate professional officer when the situation warranted, but his smile was never far removed. His pride in his family and his profession was known to all. He demonstrated that with his valient fight against his disease. RIP Jeff. Rick Jansen LFD (retired)
Susan, Mark and I are SO very sorry for your loss! I never knew Jeff, but he was an amazing man! Our hearts go out to you and your family at this tragic time! We are here for you if you ever need anything. All our love and hugs!
