James Carl McGee

James Carl McGee, 82, passed away September 19, 2018 in Laramie, Wyoming. James was born on August 10, 1936 in Presho, South Dakota to Amelia and Jay McGee. He had four siblings: Donald, Elmer, Robert, and Mary.

Jim, aka Fibber McGee, went to school in Kennebec through middle school before going to work at the grain elevator. Guy Smith got to know Jim when he would stop by the elevator and soon hired him as a ranch hand because his work ethic was like none other. Jim remained the hired hand at the Medicine Creek Ranch and eventually moved south with the Smith clan to Laramie and continued to work until both ranches were sold.

After working for the Smiths, Jim continued to work as a dishwasher and janitor in all four of the restaurants in Centennial and at the Snowy Range Ski Area. Jim was never completely satisfied working inside and returned to being hired hand at the Deerwood Ranch and the Hecht Ranch until he was 80 years old.

Jim is remembered for his dedication and hard work. He was a friend to many. He loved to laugh and always acted in an impish manner that was unique to only him. Jim had the kindest soul of anyone and loved telling stories. He would often talk about the shenanigans he was part of with Grady and Troy Smith, as well as numerous pranks they would play on him. Jim never met a stranger and would give his all when helping others.

Jim is survived by his sister, nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. He also left behind numerous friends in Centennial and Laramie.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday October 6 at the Centennial Valley Church in Centennial, Wyoming. Contributions in Jim’s name can be made to the Centennial Valley Church or the Centennial Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Such a sweet, funny, kind, endearing, ornery, hard-working, entertaining guy. And with a heck of a pool shot, too. He'll be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. RIP Jim.
