On April 29, 2024, Jacob Lewis Schriner (Jake) passed away in the company of his loved ones at the age of 89, just 2 months short of his 90th birthday.
Jake was born on June 19th, 1934, in Washington, Kansas, to Herbert and Stella Schriner. He grew up with 8 siblings and he and his sister, Violet Plunk were considered the “babies” of the group. Jake began his career with the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) in 1952. After 5 years, he put his employment with UPRR on pause and joined the U.S. Navy in 1957.
While Jake was stationed in Okinawa for the restoration work from the devastation of WWII, he met the love of his life and married Kiyo Nakamura in 1961, at the age of 27. Kiyo was 24 years old. Jake and Kiyo had 3 children, John Ota, Nancy Riedel, and Ron Schriner when they moved to the United States in 1964. While in the United States, Jake and Kiyo had 2 additional children, Brenda Schriner and Jacob Lewis Schriner Jr.
Jake ended his career in the Navy in 1967 and returned to the UPRR for employment as a Heavy Equipment Operator, where he worked until he retired in 1991. He worked a total of 29 years for the UPRR. Jake and his family moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 1970 where he has remained and where he enjoyed spending time with his family hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
Jake will be dearly missed by his surviving family of his wife, 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Visitation and Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 10, at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home from 9:30-10:30 A.M. The Funeral will begin at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow services at Cheyenne National Cemetery with Military Honors performed by The United States Navy and The American Legion Post #6. Jake you will be dearly missed by all the people you and kyio have touched over the years. I will miss talking about the time you and my grandpa spent with Union Pasific.
