Monday, October 14, 2019, Fern E. Humphreys passed away at age 99, in Laramie, Wyoming.
Fern was born April 13, 1920, in Hawarden, Iowa, to Herman C. Wilkens and Edna C. Stoltenburg Wilkens. She grew up on a farm in Hawarden and, at age 18, hitchhiked with a girlfriend to Casper, Wyoming, where she eventually met William “Bill” Humphreys. The two were married in 1947 and had one son, Richard.
Following her marriage to Bill, a veteran of World War II, Fern became a lifetime member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, where she was involved in service projects for veterans.
Fern loved children and enjoyed babysitting for friends and family. She developed a reputation for always having homemade chocolate chip cookies in the cookie jar, and she loved giving out candy.
Fern learned to play canasta, penuckle, and bridge as a child—and she was able to share her lifelong love of games with her son and daughter-in-law, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She had a sharp wit and dry sense of humor. Fern loved to travel but never learned to drive.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Edna, her siblings, Walter, Lucille, Wilmer, Lester, Harriet, Ruth, and Glen, and her husband, Bill. She is survived by her son, Richard, and his wife, Barbara, their daughters, Christina (Phil) Hutchison and Michelle (Brandon) Davis, and seven great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank those who checked in on, chauffeured, helped, and otherwise cared for Fern over the years.
A celebration of Fern’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Altitude Chophouse & Brewery in Laramie, Wyoming.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, 8806 Yellowstone Road, Cheyenne, WY 82009.
