Evelyn (Cain) Boggs, a loving wife, mother, and retired college professor, passed away on April 10th, 2024, at the age of 79. Born to Pete and Margie Cain in Texas, Evelyn’s childhood was marked by frequent relocations, including a stint in Alaska before it achieved statehood. After earning her bachelor’s degree in biology from Colorado State University in 1967, as well as her master’s degree from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, Evelyn and her husband Dick made the adventurous decision to settle in Leadville, Colorado.
A woman of boundless energy and zeal, Evelyn embraced life’s challenges wholeheartedly, competing in numerous athletic events. Her tenacity was exemplified during Leadville’s annual Boom Days Burro race, where she narrowly missed victory due to her headstrong burro’s whims. Evelyn’s lifetime of accomplishments, accolades, and adventures could fill volumes. For 25 years, she dedicated herself as a beloved professor at Colorado Mountain College (CMC), earning the prestigious honors of Teacher of the Year for Colorado and the title of Professor Emeritus upon her retirement.
The great outdoors ignited Evelyn’s manifold passions: backpacking, sea kayaking in the Alaskan wilderness before it became mainstream, horse packing with her daughters, and bike touring across Europe and Hawaii with small trailers for camping gear. Even in her final year, her zest for cycling remained undiminished, frequently biking 10 miles at a time. Evelyn shared her extraordinary life with her husband of 57 years, Dick Boggs, and their two daughters, Christi, and Holly, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives through her generosity and selflessness.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Dick; daughters Christi (Rachel) and Holly (Tobias); sisters Linda, Nancy, and Candy (Dave), and brothers Frank (Phylis) and Bob.
Cremation was chosen and there will be no public services at this time.
I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Duck and Evelyn dancing to “My Girl” at Spring Winds.
Christi, Rachel, and Dick, I was so sorry to learn of your great loss. I surely enjoyed her presence over the years when we would all gather for a meal at Sweet Melissas or an event at Rachel and Christi's home, or elsewhere when I would come to Laramie. Tonight I got to read of more of how she spent her life and contributing to enriching others' lives that I never knew about. Whenever I go to Leadville, I'll think of her in that beautiful place.
I am so sorry for your loss Christi. You Mother sounds like she was an amazing woman. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Kim
