Chloe Marie Jones, age 71 of Laramie, passed away in the early morning of December 10, 2022 at Hospice of Laramie after a courageous and brief journey with pancreatic cancer. Chloe was born in 1951 to J. Emerson and Eileen Utter in Wheatland, WY. She was raised on a farm 10 miles west of town where from a very young age she learned farming, animal husbandry, and managerial skills from her parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family, and neighbors.
After highschool, Chloe attended the University of Wyoming and took up studies in biology and botany. In Laramie, she met her future husband, Rodney G. Jones, when he got her attention as she passed a construction site he was working on at the corner of Grand Avenue and 17th Street. They married in October 1972 and celebrated their 50th anniversary just before her cancer diagnosis.
The newlyweds moved to Wheatland and spent the next two years working on her parents’ farm. They then made homes in Medicine Bow and Elk Mountain before moving to Laramie in 1981. Chloe was the proud mother of Nicholas and Scott. In addition to being a mom and wife, among other roles, she worked at Westland Federal Savings and Loan, State Farm, and Laramie Insurance Company. She then worked at the City of Laramie for over 12 years as an HR Specialist with a focus on payroll and benefits.
In 2003 Chloe left the city and started a 12 year career as a staff member at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy. Besides the farm, this was the highlight of her working life where she was able to engage with students and colleagues from around the world. She served as Data and Communications Manager where some of her responsibilities included creating the newsletter, maintaining the website, and providing support to the students and faculty. She retired in 2015 to provide more support to Rod after he suffered a heart attack.
In addition to her work and raising her sons, she was able to be Nana to her grandchildren, Alex and Reece. From their birth until Nick and his family moved to Casper in 2018, Chloe played an active role in their afterschool and summer care. Chloe adored being Nana and loved Alex and Reece so much.
An avid gardener, birder, and photographer, Chloe spent much of her spare time, and her retirement since 2015 enjoying her gardens. She also loved and appreciated family history and spent as much time as she could over the past many decades organizing and curating the information and photos that had been passed down to her.
Chloe is survived by her husband, Rod Jones, two sons, Nick (Vandy) Jones of Casper and Scott (Ty) Tedmon-Jones of Laramie, two beloved grandchildren, Alex and Reece, sister Bonnie DenDooven of Arizona, brother Kevin Utter of Colorado, as well as many extended family members. Chloe is preceded in death by her parents J. Emerson and Eileen Utter, and brothers Dennis, Alan, Brian and Lynn.
Chloe’s legacy of a peaceful, beautiful, and loving life has impacted so many individuals and her life will be celebrated on January 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Alice Hardie Stevens Center on the grounds of the Laramie Plains Museum/Ivinson Mansion. Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home is managing arrangements. As Chloe loved flowers and the beauty of life, attendees are encouraged to wear spring colors.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hospice of Laramie in memory of Chloe Marie Jones. Their address is 1754 Centennial Drive, Laramie, WY 82072. The family is also planning a memorial bench and garden in Laramie and/or Wheatland.
