Carter Nyquist, 97, died peacefully on August 21, 2022 at Springwind Assisted Living in Laramie, Wyoming. Prior to moving to Laramie, Carter resided in Sheridan, Wyoming where he was active at the senior center and devotedly cared for his wife, Maxine.
Carter and Maxine enjoyed travel and made many road trips throughout the West. Carter will be remembered by family and friends for his quick wit, charisma, sense of humor, and love of socializing. He was always ready with a joke–usually corny–and enjoyed puns. Also memorable were his hairstyle choices, including an afro and a handlebar mustache (although not at the same time).
Born in 1925 to Algot and Lillian (Baker) in rural eastern Montana, Carter graduated from high school in Froid, MT. He served in the Navy in 1943-44, after which he returned home and married Mary Ellen Johnson. They lived in Montana and later Cheyenne, where Carter was employed as a salesman for Farmer’s Co-op and NAPA Auto Parts, and served in the honor guard for the Knights of Columbus. Carter relocated to Los Angeles and sold RVs. He married Maxine in 1972. After retirement they moved to Phoenix, where he was active in the American Legion Honor Guard.
Carter is survived by his sons: Bill, Pat, Mike, Tim, and his daughter, Dee; eight grandchildren: Carol, Erica, Willy, Shelly, Cade, Mike, DJ, and Trisha; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, his oldest daughter, Jacque Rasmussen, and his younger brother, Jim Nyquist.
Graveside services will be held at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at 10 A.M. on September 30, 2022 with Military Honors.

Carter loved a full life and will always be remembered for his kindness, wit, and boundless energy. I’m sad we won’t be at the funeral but will surely keep Carter and his family in my thought.
