Bertha Lacy

Bertha Lacy, 92, of Laramie, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2021 at Ivinson Memorial Hospital. She was born March 31, 1928 to Charles and Grace Phillips in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. The family briefly lived in Lisco, Nebraska and Harrison, Arkansas. They moved to Laramie when she was a young girl. Bertha graduated from Laramie High School in 1946. She met Gene Lacy, a local barber, when she was working in downtown Laramie for Dr. Dockter, Optometrist. It was love at first sight and they were married three months later on March 15, 1953.

She was a loving mother to her three children and cared for over 75 foster babies and children. She was also the owner and manager of Jack and Jill Nursery and Daycare. She took up golf when Gene retired from the Laramie Fire Department and could be found at the golf course almost every day until a few years ago. The couple spent winters in St. George, Utah, and summers at their home in Laramie. She had been living at Ivinson Home for Ladies for the last six months and enjoyed everyone’s companionship.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene in December of 2018, her parents Charles and Grace Philips, brother Cody Philips, sister Shirley Moore, son-in-law Ed DeCora, and sister-in-law Pauline Steen.

She is survived by her sister Beverly (Fisher) Roberts of Ft. Collins, Colorado; daughter Sandy DeCora of Laramie; sons Cody Lacy (Sheryl Howe) of Longmont, Colorado and Ron (Melissa) Lacy of Lakewood, Colorado; grandchildren Jason (Crystal) DeCora of Traverse City, Michigan, Kelli DeCora of Laramie, Jared (Gioja) Lacy, Ryan (Amy) Lacy, Rachel (Matt) McReavy, Jenna (Austin) Riley, and Jimmy Lacy, all of Denver, Colorado; along with 12 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held this summer for Bertha and Gene.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Laramie Foster Closet or Laramie Animal Welfare Society.

Bertha was one of the First Ladies I met at the the ladies golf group. At 80+ she was such an in inspiration as she walked the golf course and played faster than anyone in the group. She was one of the kindest people I’ve known and so fun to be around. I missed her wonderful smile and and welcoming way when she stopped playing with us. What a privilege to have known her. My condolences to her family who she loved so much. Penny Boysen

Sandy, Cody and Ron, So sad to hear of your loss. Although I never really knew your parents they had to be beautiful people to have raised the three of you along with all the foster children who were blessed to be in a safe home. Cherish all the happy memories,

Sandy. Cody and Ron, My deepest sympathy for the loss of your mom. I always loved running into both of your folks during Jubilee days. My mom and dad always spoke fondly of both of them. I know my dad always enjoyed their golf games. Hopefully they all are enjoying a good game of golf together. All of you are in my thoughts.
