Glenn J. Miller, 92, passed away on April 29, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on June 28, 1925 to Joseph and Lillian (Bricker) Miller in Crete, Nebraska. He graduated from Crete High School in 1943 and entered the Army the same year to serve his country in World War II. While in service he received both foreign service ribbons of World War II with stars, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Bronze Star.
He married the love of his life Marcia Aron on August 27, 1950 and they were happily married for 56 years until her passing in 2006.
He received his Bachelor’s degree from Doane College and Master’s and PhD degrees in Biochemistry from Purdue University. He was appointed Assistant Professor by the University of Wyoming on February 1, 1956 and remained with that institution until his retirement on June 31, 1986. While at the University of Wyoming he served in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry and the Divisions of Agricultural Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and was Head of the Biochemistry Division. Dr. Miller’s primary research involved the characteristics and metabolism of lipids in domestic and wild ruminant animals. He was the senior author of over 40 journal articles and numerous in-house publications and served as Manuscript Reviewer for the Journals of Food Science and Agricultural and Food Chemistry. During his academic career he developed several Undergraduate and Graduate level courses and helped develop several curricula. He received the Lawrence Meeboer Agricultural Teaching Award, the Faculty Award of Merit from the Wyoming Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society and was awarded Outstanding Faculty Member of the year by the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. He served on numerous Divisional, College and University Committees including one term as Secretary of the University Faculty.
He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Fellow), the American Meat Science Association, the American Oil Chemists’ Society, the Institute of Food Science, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Honor Societies, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi. He was also a member of B.P.O.E. Laramie Lodge 582, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He as an avid fisherman and Wyoming Cowboys football and basketball fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother, and his loving wife Marcia Miller. He is survived by his children Patricia Keller and husband Michael of Las Vegas, NV, Carl Miller and wife Tammy Miller of Laramie, and Leslie Miller of Ft. Collins, CO, grandchildren Lindsey Keller, Ashley (Miller) Lang and husband Jeff Lang, Sarah Hilgenberg and Jenna Hilgenberg and great grandchildren Porter, Libby and Tanner Lang and very special friends Jim Andersen and George Engen. He was an inspiration to his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Cremation has taken place and at his request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Laramie.

I grew up as close friends with Leslie, Mr. Miller was a nice man. I have to admit I didn't know he was a national hero too. I remember him well, playing in his boat (he wasn't as happy about that as I was), eating over, remember his love for the Pokes, his listening to the away games on the radio, and many other instances. My heart feel heavy at the news of his passing.
So sorry for the loss of both Marcia and Glenn, we were neighbors for years when you were on Spring Creek and my family on Ord St. I baby-sat Patricia and Carl many times and our parents were dear friends. I grew up right across the street from the Miller family and they have been life long friends. I was closest in age to Leslie but I was well acquainted with the whole family. Mr. Miller was a kind man and will be missed. Patricia was always fun to be around when she came to visit and I looked up to Carl for his expertise with cars and all things mechanical. I am very sorry for your loss, this has to be very hard on everyone. I now work with Jeff Lang, who is an incredible person and a great friend. It would seem my ties with both the Andersons (Tammy) and the Millers spans my lifetime. It is a small world we all live in and my thoughts and prayers are with all of your.

I first met Glenn Miller in the early 1970's when I attended UW. He was an inspiration to those around him. He was proud of his children and wife and his household was always warm and welcoming. His children are evidence of his values and those who knew him will miss him. Time passes and even people who seem indestructible finally leave us. That is how Glenn seemed to me. I am sad he is gone, but what a wonderful and long life he had, living to see his children grown with children of their own. My sympathies and comfort are sent to his children, all of whom I know and care about. I hope Trish, Carl and Leslie have lots of memories to keep them warm :) My wife and I send our best.
