Doris Elizabeth West, 86, of Laramie died Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at her home.
Doris was born to Johnny and Leola McKenzie in Sycamore, Georgia on June 2, 1935. She grew up and lived in Georgia for most of her life, attending a boarding school as a child.
In 1955 in North Carolina, she married James Monroe West and later had two children, Greg and Barbara.
She attended Albany State College in Albany, Georgia and received her bachelor’s degree to become a teacher. While in college, she pledged to the Zeta Phi Beta sorority.
She taught in Blakely Alabama, Stafford, and Prince William County schools until she retired in 1991. After retirement, she became a Red Cross Educator.
Throughout her life, Doris was a devout Christian and always loved taking care of her kids, grandbabies, and her numerous beloved pets.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings Robert McKenzie and Geraldine Wiley; ex son-in-law Paul “Sunny” Kruger Bryant III; and niece Kimberly Wiley.
She is survived by her children Gregory West and Barbara Culley-Barbour (husband Tyrone Barbour); former son-in-law Kelvin Culley; grandchildren DeJanee, Nia, and Soleil Culley and Dimitri Barbour; Sister-in-Law Mineva West; cousins Richard Martin and Mary Martin; nephews Derek, Meon, and Elvin Wiley, Stewart McKenzie, nieces Sevillia McKenzie-Lee, Lisa McKenzie, Myra West Edge, Daisy Alvon West; and her beloved dog Luke.
She will be laid to rest with her husband, James, in Quantico National Cemetery in late spring/early summer of 2022. An update will be posted closer to the service.
